Chronic lung disease affects the lungs of newborns, especially those born early (prematurely). Chronic lung disease—also known as bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD)—results from damage to parts of the newborn's lungs. The damaged lung tissue traps air or collapses, fills with fluid, and produces extra mucus.
