When to See a Doctor

You have answered Yes to:

Are you having problems breast-feeding?


See significance of breast-feeding problems if you need information to help you answer the questions below.

Review health risks that may increase the seriousness of your symptoms.

Note:

You can safely continue breast-feeding your baby or pumping breast milk to feed your baby while you seek care. You can try using a warm, wet washcloth over the affected breast for about 15 minutes to help your symptoms. Try this at least 3 times a day. Massaging the affected breast may also help.

Is your baby having trouble latching Click here to see an illustration. on to your breast to feed?

Call your health professional today if you answer "Yes" to any of the following questions.

Yes

Do you have sore, red or very pink nipples, sometimes with stabbing or burning breast pain during or between feedings?

Yes

Do you have a hard lump that does not go away after you breast-feed?

If you have answered "No" to the above questions, go back to Check Your Symptoms and continue to answer the questions to evaluate your symptoms.
