When to See a Doctor

You have answered Yes to:

Do you have a rash or sores on the skin of the penis or scrotum?


See significance of a rash or sores if you need information to help you answer the questions below.

Review health risks that may increase the seriousness of your symptoms.

Note:

If you have a rash or growths on your penis or scrotum, do not have sexual contact or activity until you have been evaluated by your health professional. This will reduce the risk of spreading a possible infection to your partner. Your sex partner may also need to be evaluated and treated.

You may wait to see if the symptoms improve over the next 24 hours (or specified time period) if you answer "Yes" to any of the following questions.

Yes

Do you have a burning feeling and a red, itchy rash on the head of your penis that has lasted for longer than 24 hours?

Yes

Has your penis been red and swollen, and a rash has developed within 24 hours after being exposed to irritating chemicals?

You need an appointment within the next 1 to 2 weeks if you answer "Yes" to any of the following questions.

Yes

Do you think you have jock itch, and the rash has not gotten better after 2 weeks of home treatment?

Yes

Do you have a wartlike rash on your penis or scrotum?

Yes

Do you have a rash in the genital area that has not gone away after 2 weeks of home treatment?

If you have answered "No" to the above questions, go back to Check Your Symptoms and continue to answer the questions to evaluate your symptoms.
