Side Effects of Zyprexa
Side Effects of Zyprexa
Question:
I am 34 years old. I am taking Zyprexa. Does this medication affect my cholesterol? Can it affect my kidneys?
Answer:
Zyprexa is the brand name for olanzapine. This medication has been approved by the Food and Drug Administration to treat schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and agitation. It is also prescribed for a variety of other conditions.
Olanzapine can increase cholesterol levels. About 20% to 25% of people taking this medication will have an increase in their cholesterol levels; up to 40% can have increased levels of triglycerides. You should discuss with your doctor whether you need to have your cholesterol and triglyceride levels monitored while you are taking olanzapine.
Olanzapine generally does not cause kidney problems.
