There's a big difference between chuckling about something a patient has done behind closed doors to actually doing it in front of the patient (or when you believe they are under anesthesia). One never gets back to the patient, the other directly hurts their feelings because the doctors (and it seems, a number of nurses as well) do it right in front of them! How's a patient supposed to feel? That it's all right for someone to make fun of them, their disorder, their size or whatever it is of which is being made fun? While situations such as these are shown on "House" and "ER" all the time, those are television programs where script writers have given actors things to say, so the "patients" know it's not directed at them personally. In a real OR or doctor's office, it's not the same; the people and the feelings are real, and they get hurt. If a healthcare person needs to "blow off steam" or make fun of someone, do it later on, when you KNOW that the patient isn't close by and can p

When I get an insensitive doctor, I find another one. The ones that don't respect their job, should get another profession. The last thing a sick person needs is to be ridiculed..........

uroblade 01:24:12 AM Sep 16 2008 Report This! 5,000,000 cheers for the political correctness patrol. Send them to the OR and ER where they are truly needed. Come on........BUTActual purposeful dangerous behavior is not tolerated by state medical boards, and should be reported when observed. These boards are required by the state to diligently investigate all such reports. They are composed of more than just MDs, and take their responsibility to protect the public seriously.============================= The Doctors are regulated by other doctors.

It happened to me in 86. A couple of doctors and nurses made fun of me in the operating room. Because of what happened I would never go back to the largest hospital in Northern Virginia. I think about it now and I am 56 and it still rattles me. What a bunch of jerks they were

I was sexually assaulted by our family Dr when I was 26. He told me it was part of my annual exam to have an orgasm. He then proceeded to attempt to stimulate me, and I faked it. I went to the police shortly after I told the story to my mother later that day. They investigated, and it was he said she said. They told to get a new Dr, preferably a woman for these exams. They also told me this is more common than many women know. This Dr. was 46 years old, and has a family. The board of MD's (whom we approached for help) started trashing my family, and did nothing. I also offered to take a polygraph. I never even filed a damages lawsuit against this creepy Dr. Needless to say my father wants to kill him to this day. This was in suburban Minneapolis, 2006. The Dr. is still practicing. I wonder how many other young women are to embarrassed to come forward? The board of MD's do nothing for you. I know some nurse is going to post a message here telling me how rare sexual abuse is, but I'm t

I worked in a large psych hospital for 4 years (all I could take). Without some way of working off steam the staff would "pop" All the high-stress jobs (Military, Police, Fire, EMT) have some sort of gallows humour that keeps them sane from handling the ugly problems set upon them by others. Watch, and while they are telling their jokes, they are also professionally saving the life (or arm, leg, child, etc)

I spent 4 years working in a large psych hospita. The pressure is such that if you don't have some way of releasing it you will "pop". Therefore, staff make what seem to outsiders inappropriate remarks and jokes that are really only understood by others in the same business. (Cops, Firemen, EMT's Military all have a similiargallows humour understood only by those in their business) They are not rude or mean, they are keeping themselves from loosing it. Watch how they act while they'e making a really gross statement about worms, eyeballs, and nuts. They never lose their gentleness or (most importantly) professiona actions.

I'm reading a lot of excuses here for bad behavior and wonder why that is?Are you telling me that physicians and nurses are not capable of behaving in a professional manner? So now here is another group who expects a pass in life? What I read is that because of their CHOSEN field the OR staff is all victims of the horror that they see thus they are victims and that's why they behave so abominably. You don't get a pass in my opinion. If medical personnel have difficulty dealing with what comes with the job either leave the profession or get into counseling. You don't do us a favor, we PAY for these services and should be treated with dignity and courtesy whether present, under anesthesia or absent.

I've been a nurse for 39 years. I won't deny that there is a lot of crude joking...mostly by Drs.....in the OR as well as "behind the desk". But I've gotta tell you that with every episode of 'House' I think to myself "wish I could have said /done that to a patient"!!
