Ask An Expert: Celiac Patients and Yeast

Question:

Can celiac patients tolerate yeast?

Answer:

Most yeast is suitable for people with celiac disease. This includes the following types of yeast:

  • Active dry

  • Autolyzed

  • Baker's

  • Nutritional

  • Torula

It is probably best to avoid brewer's yeast, since it may contain barley. When brewer's yeast is a by-product of beer, it is not gluten free. Tests are unable to accurately confirm the amount of residual gluten in this type of yeast. If in doubt, leave it out.
