Ask An Expert: LASIK and Diabetes

Question:

Can a person with type 2 diabetes controlled with oral medication have LASIK eye surgery?

Answer:

Yes, people with type 2 diabetes and good blood sugar control can have LASIK eye surgery. The major contraindications to LASIK surgery have to do with abnormal conditions of the front surface of the eyes. When eye damage occurs related to diabetes, it primarily affects the retina, the back surface of the eye.
