Social skills training for people with schizophrenia


Social skills training classes teach people with schizophrenia how to improve skills to get along with other people.

Class topics may include:

  • Acceptable public behavior.
  • Conversation skills, including group conversation skills.
  • Developing leisure activities.
  • Decision making and taking responsibility.
  • Using public services, such as public transportation.
  • Coping with frustration.
  • Giving and receiving praise and criticism.

Social skills training classes can also include very specific types of education, such as classes on:

  • Parenting.
  • Anger management.
  • Assertiveness.
  • Basic hygiene.
  • Money management.

Role playing is an important part of social skills training classes. Role playing may include acting out common situations, such as asking for help or interviewing for a job.
