Fifth disease is often confused with other conditions with similar symptoms, including:

  • Viral infections that produce a rash, such as German measles (rubella) or scarlet fever.
  • Allergic reactions that cause a rash, such as reactions to medications or other substances.
  • Diseases that affect the joints, such as arthritis or systemic lupus erythematosus.
