Other conditions with symptoms similar to fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD)

Other conditions with symptoms similar to the effects of fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD) include:

  • Fetal hydantoin syndrome (FHS). Fetal hydantoin syndrome is a group of birth defects that results if a woman takes the seizure medication hydantoin while she is pregnant. Babies with FHS may have small brains (microcephaly), little or no fingernails and toenails, physical and mental retardation, and heart defects.
  • Cornelia de Lange syndrome. Cornelia de Lange syndrome is a condition that a child is born with. The cause is unknown. Common characteristics of children with Cornelia de Lange syndrome include low birth weight, delayed growth and small stature, and small head size. The typical facial features are thin eyebrows (which may meet at midline), long eyelashes, short upturned nose, and thin downturned lips. The child may have excessive body hair (hirsutism), small hands and feet, missing arms or legs, and many other birth defects.
  • Noonan syndrome. Noonan syndrome is a condition a child is born with that may result in short stature, low-set ears, and congenital heart defects. Some children also have below-normal intelligence. The cause is unknown, although in some cases Noonan syndrome may be passed on genetically.
