Medical history for colic
A health professional will take your baby's medical history for colic by gathering information about crying episodes. He or she will want to see whether other conditions may be causing the crying or whether you may need help in coping with the crying behavior.
The health professional may ask the following questions:
- What time does the baby cry? What is going on in the home at those times?
- How do you handle the crying? What comfort measures have you used to console the baby?
- Is the baby breast-fed or bottle-fed? How do you hold the baby during feeding? How are you burping the baby? Does the baby spit up or vomit during or after feedings?
- Does the baby have constipation, diarrhea, blood or mucus in stools, or an excessive amount of abdominal gas?
- Has the baby been gaining weight?
- Does the baby cry when he or she is around someone who is smoking or after being around someone who was smoking? Did the mother smoke during pregnancy?
- Is the family under extra stress, such as financial or job strain? Are there any problems in the relationships among family members?
- Is the primary caregiver having any emotional problems, such as depression or anxiety?
