Maternal health and preterm labor

Your doctor or nurse-midwife may decide not to delay preterm labor with tocolytic medication if you have:

  • Very high blood pressure.
  • Severe preeclampsia.
  • HELLP syndrome, which is a life-threatening liver disorder thought to be a type of severe preeclampsia.
  • Heart or lung disease.
  • An infection (especially in the uterus) that is not responding to treatment with antibiotic medication.
  • Severe bleeding from the vagina.
