Change in the pattern of headaches

A change in the pattern of headaches, such as more frequent or severe headaches, may mean that a new or different problem has developed. A sinus infection, high blood pressure, or a brain tumor can cause changes in the pattern of your headaches. Problems such as a cold or an injury to the neck will often go away with home treatment.

If you are experiencing a change in the pattern of your headaches and a new problem has developed, additional tests may be needed to diagnose and treat this problem.

If you have a new and different headache, use the questions in the Check Your Symptoms section to determine if and when to see a health professional.
