Calf squeeze test for Achilles tendon rupture
Calf squeeze test for Achilles tendon rupture
The calf squeeze test (also called the Thompson or the Simmond's test) can identify an Achilles tendon rupture. While you are kneeling on a chair with your legs hanging over the edge, or lying face down with your lower legs bent up 90 degrees, your health professional will squeeze your calves.
- If the Achilles tendon is still attached, your foot will flex downward.
- If the tendon is ruptured, your foot will not move.
- If there is a partial tear, the calf squeeze test may be normal.
