Burning, tingling, or numbness of the lips or inside the mouth

Changes in feeling inside the mouth may be caused by:

  • Irritation of the mouth from rough or broken teeth or fillings, appliances, dentures, foods, or tobacco.
  • Allergies to foods, medications, mouthwashes, denture base materials, or metallic fillings.
  • Infection, such as thrush or cold sores.
  • Nutritional deficiencies.
  • A sore in or near the mouth.
  • Other diseases, such as diabetes.
  • A problem with a nerve or the nervous system.

Continuing numbness of the tongue or other areas of the mouth can be a symptom of oral cancer and should be evaluated by a health professional.
