Chapter 7: Colon cancer -- Who's at risk

When it comes to reducing your risk of developing colon cancer, there is a lot of good news. This is a type of cancer that usually develops slowly, which means that there is time to take steps to prevent it or at least to detect it before it becomes serious. Researchers also know more about ways to reduce your risk of developing colon cancer than they do about other types of cancer. Finally, many of the factors that affect the development of colon cancer are things that you can control - physical activity, diet, vitamin use.

There is also bad news. Colon cancer ranks third in terms of the number of new cancer cases in the United States, and it is the third leading cause of cancer deaths for both women and men. But it doesn't have to be that way.
