Who develops back problems?

If you're like most adults, you're likely to suffer from low back pain at some point in your life. About 80% of adult Americans will experience at least one episode of low back pain. While research has found that some conditions or activities put you at greater risk for such problems, many people who don't have these risk factors still develop backaches.

Fast facts

  • Low back pain is the second most common neurological ailment in the United States — second only to headache.

  • Each year 31 million Americans (about 1 in 7 adults) experience back pain.
