Mixing Chantix, Zoloft and Wellbutrin

Question:

I'm about to take Chantix to stop smoking. I also am on Zoloft (50 mg) and Wellbutrin (300 mg) daily. Is there a chance of a serious reaction with these medications?

Answer:

Chantix is the brand-name for varenicline, a new prescription medication to help people stop smoking. Varenicline became available in 2006. Since it has only been on the market for a short time, very little is known about how it interacts with other medications. So far, there are no warnings for interactions with either sertraline (chemical name for Zoloft) or bupropion (chemical name for Wellbutrin).

The most common side effects reported in clinical trials of varenicline were nausea and abnormal dreams. Since nausea and sleep problems can be side effects of both sertraline and bupropion, it is possible that the medications could interact to cause a more significant reaction, but that is only a theoretical concern at this time.

Stopping smoking is one of the best decisions you can make for your health. If you develop any new or unusual symptoms around the time you start taking varenicline or when you stop smoking, contact your doctor.
