10 Signs to Dismiss Your Doctor

10 Signs to Dismiss Your Doctor

Choosing a physician is tricky business. You want someone you are comfortable with and whose instincts you trust. When you work as a team with your doctor, you maximize chances of fighting disease and staying healthy. But not all doctors will give you the care you need. Here are some signs that you are not getting the care you deserve.

    You Can't Get an Appointment

When you're sick, getting an appointment with your doctor should be a given. If your doctor's office can't squeeze you in for another two weeks when you're in a health crisis, then it's time to find another office. Most offices will purposely leave 'sick slots' open every day so that if someone calls with an emergency, that person can be accommodated.

    Second Opinions Are Scorned

If you are concerned about a health issue, getting a second opinion is a wise thing to do. A doctor who discourages you from seeking an outside voice is not someone you want to continue your relationship with. There is no such thing as too much knowledge when it comes to your concerns.

    Bad Bedside Manner

A good bedside manner is not a luxury, it's a necessity. If you don't feel comfortable because your doctor is brusque, curt or dismissive, then you might be afraid to ask some important questions. Don't let anyone intimidate you into not getting the information you need.

    Refusal to Reveal Records

The ability to share or look at your records is a good way to determine that you've been properly served over the years. If a doctor doesn't want to let you see your records, walk away. This can be a common problem with optometrists who often want to prevent you from getting the same care from a generic retailer.

    Forgoing Face Time

Going to see a physician should be just that. If you are spending all your time with an RN and only see your doctor for the last five minutes of your visit, then you aren't getting the attention you deserve. Nurses are incredibly knowledgeable, but if you're paying to see your doctor, then face time is a must.

    Lackluster Listening

A doctor should treat your complaints with attention and thought, not dismiss them. If you constantly feel like your doctor isn't listening to what you're saying, find someone who does. You know your body better than anyone else and if something feels abnormal to you, then you need your doctor to take your opinion into account.

    Surly Staff

When booking an appointment be sure the staff is welcoming. Rude personnel may prevent you from calling up when you really need to speak to a doctor. It's important to be comfortable so that you don't let a problem go undetected for fear of being a pest. Remember, it's their job to help you out, don't be afraid to speak up.

    Failing to Return Calls

An unresponsive doctor is not someone who is going to be attentive to your needs. If your doctor doesn't return calls or faxes, find someone who does. Having your questions answered in a timely manner is crucial in catching a problem at the earliest stage. Response time is a critical part of protecting your health.

    Product Pusher

Do you find you walk away with expensive vitamins or products every time you visit your doctor? If so, your doctor is pushing products on you, and may not have your best interest in mind. Find a doctor who cares about you as an individual patient, and not just as a consumer.
